Description

1. Detailed information about the DNA test (test principle)

The paternity test is based on the analysis of human genetic material, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). DNA is a linear molecule found in the nuclei of cells, where we examine segments called STR systems or markers. These vary in length among different individuals. The length of a segment is called an allele and is represented by a number. Each individual has two alleles of a given system, with the child always inheriting one from the mother and the other from the father. In each system, the child must have one allele that is the same as the biological father’s. In this test, we examine a basic set of 22 STR markers, plus one additional segment used to determine the genetic sex of the sample’s origin.

To perform the paternity test, samples are taken from both the child and the alleged father via a buccal swab (mouth swab) using a collection kit (1 for the tested man and 1 for the tested child), which we will send to you, or using non-standard material.

If you want to test multiple individuals (children, potential fathers, or add the mother), it is possible to add additional tested individuals to your order for an extra fee.

The collected samples consist of epithelial cells, which contain DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). In our accredited genetic laboratory, DNA is then extracted from the cells and subjected to thorough and precise analysis using the most modern methods. The child's DNA profile is then compared with the alleged father's DNA profile and statistically evaluated. Since every child inherits their genetic information from both biological parents, the examination of the DNA of the tested individuals accurately determines the probability of whether the alleged father is the biological father of the child (more than 99.999%) or 0% (in the case of exclusion).

The result of the DNA test is a simple report that either definitively excludes paternity or confirms it as practically proven. The provided DNA profiles (i.e., the results of the analysis in the individual tested systems) allow for comparison with other results (identity verification).

2. Who is this test suitable for?

It is suitable for anyone who has personal doubts or questions about biological parenthood concerning a specific child and wants to verify the biological relationship first.
It is also suitable in situations where you need to verify the results of previous DNA tests, as it includes the DNA profiles of the tested individuals.
DNA test EXTRA PLUS is especially suitable in situations requiring high sensitivity and reliable differentiation of disputed paternity among closely related men, such as when potential fathers of the tested child are close relatives (e.g., brothers, cousins, father-son, etc.) or when the child’s mother and the alleged father are closely related, and so on.

3. How will the DNA test result help me, and what will I learn?

Confirmation or exclusion of paternity: The primary result of the test is to determine whether the tested man is the biological father of the child. The result is typically presented either as the probability of paternity (e.g., 99.9% or higher to confirm paternity) or exclusion of paternity (probability of 0%).

DNA profiles of tested individuals: The result includes the DNA profiles of the tested individuals. The DNA profiles in the result report (i.e., the results of the analysis in the individual tested systems for each tested person) allow comparison with other results (identity verification).

If it is not possible to collect a sample using the provided collection kit due to the unavailability of the tested individual, other available samples or items from the tested person can be used – non-standard material. The analysis of non-standard material is subject to an additional fee according to the current price list. For more information on non-standard materials, please refer to the following link: https://dnatest.sk/odber-vzorky/#nestandardny-material

7. Test result – how long it takes, where it will be delivered

The result of the DNA test will be sent to you by email no later than 5 business days after the samples are delivered to the laboratory, to the email address provided in your order. If you choose the option for a printed result in your order, we will also send the result by mail to the address you provided.

If you need the test result sooner, it is possible to prioritize the analysis in our laboratory for an express fee (result within 2 or 3 business days).

8. Interpretation of the result

Paternity excluded – paternity of the identified man is excluded (in the given system) when the identified man does not have any of the allele pairs present in the tested child in that system. Due to the rare possibility of a random genetic mutation, paternity is considered reliably excluded only when it is excluded by at least two of the examined STR systems.

Paternity practically proven – if paternity is not excluded, the paternity index (PI) and probability of paternity (W) are calculated. With a sufficient number of examined STR systems, the probability of paternity reaches certainty – at least 99.999%.

Who is the STANDARD paternity test suitable for?

The STANDARD paternity test is suitable in cases when you want to verify or exclude the paternity of the tested man towards the child. Informed consent is not required, nor do you provide the names of the test subjects, so 100% anonymity is guaranteed. However, the origin of the samples analysed is known only to the client, i.e. the identity of the persons tested has not been verified by a forensic expert and the testimonial value of such a test in court is low. However, the laboratory test itself is done in the same way as the forensic paternity test, so the result is the same.

What can these tests reveal?

A DNA test will either unequivocally rule out paternity or confirm paternity with a probability of at least 99.99% (i.e. “paternity virtually proven”).

What does an anonymous paternity test mean?

It is a comparison of anonymous samples without identification of the tested persons. The identity of these persons is known only to the person ordering the test.

What is the difference between STANDARD and EXTRA paternity test?

The EXTRA paternity test includes, in addition to the STANDARD test, a comprehensive results report with individual DNA profiles of the tested persons and possible analyses of repeated sampling.

For whom is the LEGAL paternity test suitable?

The LEGAL paternity test is a forensic-forensic test suitable when the results of the test are to be used in court as evidence and for legal purposes or any other official acts, because the origin of the samples analysed is known, i.e. the identity of the persons tested has been verified by a forensic expert.

What samples can be used for a paternity test?

Sampling can be done using a sampling kit, which will be sent to you by post to the address you specify after you have placed your order. You will then swab the oral cavity for each person tested. If it is not possible to do such a collection, or if you do not want other people to know about the test, it is possible to use a variety of non-standard materials as a sample. For more info, visit this link. https://dnatest.sk/odber-vzorky/

Can I come to the laboratory in person to collect the sample?

If you come to our laboratory in person, we will provide you with the collection kit, and you can take the samples yourself. Alternatively, you can request us to perform the sample collection for an additional fee of 30 EUR.

When can I come to the lab to pick up my collection kit?

If you have selected the personal collection option in your order, you can arrive at any time during opening hours.

What does the sampling kit contain?

The sampling kit contains a minimum of 2 tubes of cotton swab sticks.

Marking of sticks:

Red – mother

Green – child

Yellow - marked man

Blue – other persons

The package also includes a bubble envelope in which you put the samples and send them to our address or deliver them in person.

What should I do next after ordering the test?

If you order the test, we will send you a collection kit by post (or you can collect it from us in person) with instructions on how to take a simple oral swab or a non-standard sample. You will send us the samples for analysis and if you have not yet made the payment, you will also pay the price of the test by transfer to our account. We will then carry out the analysis, calculate the probability of paternity and send you a report with the test result either electronically by email (free of charge), in hard copy by post or you can collect it in person (in both cases for an additional fee).

Can I drink or eat before sampling?

You must not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum, use nose and throat drops or sprays, brush your teeth or use mouthwash for at least 60 minutes before the collection.

I made a mistake when entering my order details (wrong number, email).
If you have entered a wrong email or phone number, please contact us at tel. +421 948 627 273 or write to dnatest@dnatest.sk. We will correct your contact details.
When will I get the results?

We send the test result report no later than the deadline specified for each test. The time limit starts on the day following receipt of the sample and crediting of the payment for the test. For example, for a STANDARD test, receiving payment and samples on Monday means that we send a report with the result no later than Monday the following week (but usually sooner). This time can be reduced by an express surcharge of 2 working days.

I have not received the result by email or post.

If you have not received an email, please check your SPAM folder. If you didn’t find the result there either, please contact us at dnatest@dnatest.sk.

Didn’t find your question in the list?
Do not hesitate to contact us at tel. +421 948 627 273, or write to dnatest@dnatest.sk.
Can the quality of the biological material samples for DNA analysis affect the result of a paternity test?

No. In the event that, for example, the biological material sample has been spoiled (trapped food residues) or contaminated with other DNA (improper handling of samples), etc., and therefore a reliable and unambiguous DNA profile cannot be obtained from one person (the originator of the sample), the paternity test is not evaluated. In this case, we contact the customer to repeat the sampling or make a new order.

Do you also perform paternity tests before the child is born?

No, we do not perform paternity tests during pregnancy.

Is it necessary for the mother to be tested as well?

Not necessarily. However, her presence "improves" the statistical significance of the test – it increases the paternity index and the probability of paternity, or on the other hand, increases the number of exclusionary systems. If the mother is part of the paternity test, she must be non-excluded in relation to the child (the maternity is confirmed).

In case of doubt about maternity, it is necessary to test it separately. Maternity is tested in principle the same way as paternity, but it is not usually performed because there is typically no reason for it (however, with the rise of assisted reproduction, cases involving questions about maternity are becoming more common).
